Christmas Symbols

We are people who receive information through our five senses; what we see, smell, hear, taste, feel. Most decorations are seen. Christmas music which can set the mood is heard, special Christmas foods are prepared not only to look nice on a plate, but the smells of special food cooking or baking bring memories and appetite. There are scents of incense, spices and candles that make places smell better and bombard us from all sides has that have an effect on us.

Certainly, decorations are also for other special events like birthdays with streamers, candles, balloons, and party hats. Halloween has it owns flavor of décor as does Easter and Thanksgiving. As symbols, decorations might have a special meaning. That is true for the decorations of Christmas. For Memorial Day and Fourth of July we have red, white, and blue. Flags are symbolic of our nation.

Schools adopt special colors which with mascots highlight school pride. Some will decorate for special sports teams or celebrate winning seasons.

I was talking with an interior decorator and asked her why she does what she does. “People feel better psychologically” she said. When rooms are bright or light, it gives off a feeling, even with simple but nicely placed plants or pictures. She told me some want a wood-like feel, another prefers antique décor. Her job is to use her artistic touch and training to make rooms, and halls, and houses, and places of business look friendly, warm, inviting, fun, attractive, or special with just the right décor. Ask any real estate agent and they will tell you, houses and buildings sell better if it is decorated and looks attractive to potential buyers.

We go first to God and witness His creative genius, not just in how things work, but how beautiful creation is. Psalms declare the wonders of the Lord in His creation. The splendor of the skies, the stars, the moon, and sun. The formations of clouds and the color of rainbows. We see the majesty of trees, mountains, and the vastness of seas. We are not just talking about the variety of things, but variety of sights and sounds to behold.

Judi wanted me to stop on our walk yesterday just to take in the wonder of the colored-filled sky at twilight. We witness the artistry of our creator as He decorates the skies.

God decorates the forests in the fall and sparkling snow in the winter. Matthew tells us that Solomon in all his glory is not dressed like the flowers of the fields and lilies that bloom.

God is the God of beauty and demonstrates that in creatures He makes, in plants and flowers, in grasses, hills, high mountains and sky. He is the God of ALL wonders!
