26“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body broken for you.”
God provided manna in the Old Testament to the people in the wilderness. They looked to Him for the provision for life and food needed for their sustenance. The people needed correction. It wasn't Moses that provided them bread or manna - it was God Himself. You remember the wilderness wandering when Moses led the people from Egypt into the promised land, they quickly ran out of food. They were in the desert for 40 years. Miraculously God provided for them bread from heaven. It was called manna. Each day they were to go out and, like dew on the ground, bits of this substance was collected and put together for their food.
Psalm 78:24,25 says, "Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens, He rained down manna for the people to eat. He gave them grain from heaven. Men ate the bread of angels. He sent them all the food they could eat. "
Jesus was telling them now that He is the miraculous manna from heaven. Just as the first bread was provided by God Himself, so is the second bread. He was the fulfillment of the type of bread. Jesus was sent from heaven, born of the virgin Mary, God's Son. Jesus was revealing that God provides for them salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ.
People came to Jesus for bread, or more literally worldly, daily provisions, but Jesus had something better - Himself. Men are more eager to supply for the desires of the body than the needs of the soul. They also like to be amused and entertained, but lack the deeper desire for God. Jesus gives us Himself to feast upon. He sustains us day by day.
In our world today it is also common for man's attention to be of things of this world, instead of for the things of God. We certainly want health and need money; clothes are important and houses keep us warm and stylish. Cars are now a necessity for transportation and even cause us to envy others. For some of these provisions we thank God. For other things we do not have, many somehow think that God has cheated us and owes it to us. These things are only tokens of the grace and gifts from God. He wants us to be full of all that He has to offer which is found in eternal salvation by faith in Jesus Christ.
The bread at communion reminds us it is the Lord's Table. We partake, not because of our works, efforts, or good deeds. He alone provides our food upon which we feast literally and spiritually.
Application: Be intentionally eager to supply the needs of your soul rather than the desires of your body.
Prayer: God, help us to be faithful in all we do. You have given to us Jesus and in Him alone is our salvation. We praise You for that ultimate gift.
